I decided to work there to gain experience not in the design/production area, but what is behind it all. I particularly love the mirrored perspex that they use, as well as the vibrant colours.

k, p, k, p throughout the next 11 rows.
Stockinette Stitch:

5-Stitch Bobbles:

Right mitten: add these on stitches 21, 24, 17, 30, 33
Left mitten: add these on stitches 22, 25, 28, 31, 34
Continue knitting 12 more rounds.
Thumb Gusset:
Right mitten: At the beginning of the row, knit 6 stitches with the scrap yarn. *Turn the work over and purl these 6 stitches back onto the other needle. Turn the work over again and continue knitting to the end of the round.

I adore Sophie Kinsella & have been buying all her books. I suppose her writing is quick, easy & funny so therefore enjoyable as a relaxing activity. This is the first time buying a book by Claudia Carroll, but from reading the blurb & first page... it seems pretty interesting. This book is written in first person - the best way to read a girlie novel.

This logo has been appearing on a range of backpacks in Hong Kong. I first seen this on a Dr. Martin bag I bought for a friend last year. It's now been placed on a range of different brands. For some reason, it reminds me of a pig's snout.

Whether they are height heeled shoes or platforms or even just these examples, all are very popular in Hong Kong. Usually I dislike Hong Kong heeled shoes as they are very short & has a very thin heel, as well as a strapless back. Now they have a range of height heels that really stand out.

Face Masks for $60 (half price)

I came across these face masks on sale at Manning's health & beauty store. I first tried the Aloe one & was really good. The quality of the mask was great as there was a glossy paper folded within the mask to stop the mask from sticking together when in the packet. The shape of the mask was really good. It fits perfectly on the face & stays flat on the face, in comparison to a previous mask I bought from Hong Kong. I ended up purchasing 6 boxes:

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil is made with olive oil & is gentle to the eyes. This product is from Japan and I have been buying this product for over 3 years & am still loving it. I don't need to buy make-up remover as this does the job. It doesn't sting the eyes & even though I have combination skin, it doesn't give me more oil on the skin. It cost £16 (but that was a few years ago), but have found this shop in Mong Kok & bought 6 in one go for a special price, basically got 2 free. I went to Hong Kong this year & didn't find any deals for it. I ended up only buying 1, which cost $220 HKD.

Sewane Spa Pores Shrink & Repair is a brand I have tested before. I tried the product for skin that are prone to breakouts & had a whitening ingredient. I didn't want to get a whitening product or else my face wouldn't match my body, so bought this & going to test it out soon.

Clamue Aloe Mask - this mask is quite poor. The mask would fall off & don't stick to the face. The results cannot be seen much. I didn't use it again after 1 use. It was purchased from a supermarket Park & Shop, & there was a deal for buying 4 or 5 & super cheap. The packaging isn't that great. Maybe I should start judging products by it's packaging.

Biore Pore Pack - cheaper in Hong Kong & more in a pack. Under $40.

O'slee Peeling Gel - a popular trend of beauty products in East Asia that has the ability to peel off dead skin & being able to see it. You would apply this & massage in a circular motion with your fingers. Soon you will see the dead skin clumped together in little balls. Simply wash off & your face will appear smoother. I think this is a clever little skincare product, but have only used it twice so will continue to see if this product is indeed worth purchasing.

Sasatinnie Job's Tears Mask & Aloe Vera & Tea Tree Mask - these packs are travel-size & comes with 3 pieces. They all contain organic ingredients. I haven't tired it yet, but don't expect too much from them. A bad thing to say, but just an instinct. If it shows good results, then I must blog about it again.

Hello Kitty Nail Stickers - $15 HKD, it has the Hello Kitty icon, apples and stars.

Pink & Blue Hair Accessories - these are quite clever. They are used to keep your hair away from your face whilst doing your make-up. It's designed to just stick onto your hair like Velcro & doesn't leave a kink.

Suki Eyebrow Powder (02) - I have been meaning to buy an eyebrow powder, but none are available in the UK. I bought this from Sasa & was under $40. They came in a few colours (depending on what your hair colour is). I bought this as it has one super dark brown & one dark brown. The packaging is small & cute. It comes with a sponge & brush, as well as a mirror stuck on the back of the lid.

Liposh - I'm unsure of what this is, but I know one thing.. it's for your lips. It's a sponge for your lips, perhaps to clean it or something or rather.. I will find out. Anyway, both ends can be used.

Chapel at Shatin Shopping Centre

This shop is up the escalators right in front of the station. I've never noticed that & went for the first time ever. The shops there are cheap, which isn't expected from Shatin. They have this amazing jewellery shop that sold couple rings. I had my eye on one of them that was gold & shaped like a rounded square. It cost just under $700 for one, so I couldn't afford it T^T

The Chapel shop had only clothes that were white, grey or black. I ended up buying 3 dresses (all of which are dark). These earrings are for my sister. I like that they have a vintage look.

Random purchases...

Nature Secret's is a cheap purchase from a supermarket. The brand is from Korea & has a range of different products for different skin types. I used this a few times in Hong Kong & it did sting the eyes. I thought about buying a lot of these to take to the UK as they were cheap, but in the end had to buy a DHC as I have always used it & is good to the skin.

Olay White Radiance Eye Cream - I bought this as my eyes has dark circles. I'm thinking it's because I'm usually tired (panda eyes) & because my eye area tends to tan in comparison to the rest of my face as it's covered in foundation/cover-up. Hey, that's a guess... This product was under $140 HKD & I hope to get some results from it.

Beauty World Nail Cocktail Sugar - These three nail polishes are labeled with A, B & C. A is used to cover the whole of your nails. B is to cover half, & C is to cover the tip of your nails... leaving a gradient of colours. They did sell pocka dots set, but didn't fancy some dots on my nails just yet. This was purchased from Kowloon Tong's Festival Walk shopping centre for under $60 HKD.

Crack Professional is a nail polish from Korea that creates a cracked effect. I've tried it once & didn't work out so great. I was recommended by the sales person to do something, but forgot what. I'll ask somebody to read the Korean instructions for me!

Phone Wire Hairband - a popular hairband in Hong Kong. It can be kept on the wrist without leaving a mark & stopping your blood circulation. I have been using it to tie a bun on my head & it does keep the hairs in place, even on a plane where the hair becomes quite messy.

Other random stuff are just earrings & hair accessories.

This sweet shop is absolutely amazing! I'd always go there when in Hong Kong. I wanted to get a big pack of Suga sweets, but was $300 HKD... I didn't have enough money -_-;

Overall, this trip was fun (what trip wouldn't be?)
I spent a great deal of time with my family & gaining more confidence to speak Cantonese.

A top I bought from a boutique shop near Carnaby Street in London.

My sister was not that keen on the other styles we saw previously.
I believe it was in the colour pink/beige.
They also do other block colours, but this one really caught my eye.

The style of the shop is really cool & has a futuristic vibe.
One dress which was amazing was this:

Perhaps I like it because it's called a Lobster Dress.
Famous Salvador Dali created an artwork that suggests the connection between a lobster & a sexual theme.

But anyway, the label does a lot of very beautiful clothing that is clean, kind of simple, but not?
They contain a little element that makes it not so plain.

It's almost time for the Camberwell Summer Shows. I have been working on my logo and business card. The original idea was to relate it back to the website. Yet, the colour purple didn't seem too pleasing so I played around with different colours. Finally, I chose the bottom left as my business card. The colour doesn't aim for any particular gender and is strong.

The website is clean & simple, with the image of the label acting as a logo.

There's a typo (which I will sort out right now) on the "hoover your mouse...". It's suppose to be "hover". Maybe because my room is quite a mess so I subconsciously think of doing some cleaning..!

I bought these boxes today & originally wanted black ones. Yet, they didn't look that good face to face. I was looking for a box that fits the prints (not too big, not too small). I found this online from Paperchase. I chose these ones as the brown gives it an earthy, friendly feel. Also, the blue adds a bit of colour.

Today was a day of the post of this title.

I had to buy corrugated card & cut it to size so it sits inside the fabric (so the fabric isn't so flexible).

The label is very simple, with a line drawing of the design & a figure of somebody wearing it (optional to make it as something that can be worn). The labels are printed on Cairn Board Ribbed Buff 300gsm from Falkiners at Holborn. I chose it as it's strong, has subtle detail (ribbed) and a friendly colour that goes well with the design.

The design of the packaging is the product itself. It is folded & sewn at the two corners. It is too thick to be sewn on a sewing machine so it had to be hand-sewn. The thread goes round once & knotted at the front (with the label attached). The label is sewn on the left corner so it falls at an angle.

Books Made

These are the books made this year. I used to be not keen on making books. It didn't give me much satisfaction. Yet after the long process of designing, printing & finding a binder, I've come to enjoy it.

The first two books were printed with an inkjet printer. The paper is a specific paper made for printing on inkjets. I went to a bindery to get it bound & the second book cost more than I thought (£35). The reason was because the paper was too thick to have it bound by glue so needed to be stitched also. In the end, it wasn't that perfect. On the otherhand, I liked the paper & the layout a lot. The size is similar to the Penguin books & it reminds me from school.

The third book is all the imagery I have on my computer & laptop, saved in a "Found Images" folder. I wanted to communicate the fact that it was from a computer's folder. I'm keen on simplicity, & so the layout is all centred on gloss paper. The problem was the front cover. I didn't select a laminated cover so it gets dirty quite easily. Anyway I wanted to create this book as in my previous assessment, I have difficulties explaining where I get my ideas from, etc.

The forth book is based on my development, my thoughts & ideas. I know it'd be hard for others to look through my messy sketchbook, so a book is needed.

Overall, I'm beginning to like the process & the outcome of making books.

Not sure what to do with this website. I'm not too keen on the logo & I feel this is just a demo to show the concept of being able to download your own prints & able to purchase the prints on fabric. Yet, I want it to look decent & as close to finished as possible so you get a clear view.

I'm wondering whether to include a logo. I know logos are the most important thing for designer's products, but in the website I want the domain name to kind of show the name itself. It's enough to show what it is or who it's by. Also, there is a copyright text at the bottom of the site. Is that enough?

Okay... I suppose the website just isn't working for me. I need to really really simplify it. Perhaps scan the peach-coloured label & use that as a logo because it's recognisable from the products. The background should be white to give it a clean space.

Sewing Machine

I remember the first & last time I used a sewing machine was in the first year of secondary school. I bought one a few months ago & it was fun to start learning all over again, such as how to set up i.e. how to thread a sewing machine, how to thread a bobbin.

I would love to do some more prints in the future on fabric & make them into something that people can enjoy.

Invisible zip is needed as the fabric is made out of satin & cannot be stretched. I think the invisible zip is a nice touch & not tacky (because of the type of zip).

It was very difficult to sew it on at first. I tried on a dummy with a 'normal' zipper & was taking so much time. I managed to finish the second shirt today & it didn't take that long, so I'm happy.

The seam is so interesting, especially on satin. The fabric splits & you can see little grouped strands of fabric.

It took a while to screen-print on the ribbons to be used as labels. I couldn't get the design to be on the middle. It would be too high or too low (cutting part of the design).

I originally printed another label design on satin & cotton, but it didn't look right. After a group tutorial, my tutor suggested I try ribbon. I simplified the design into " - yt - " which stands for my middle/Chinese name: Yuk Ting.

After sewing the labels, I would have to cut off the extra thread. The first time I cut too close to the ends so part of the ribbon would fall off. I had to hand sew part of it back on.

One thing I have been thinking about...
I don't want people to think "oh it's pink, it's for girls".
The colour isn't really pink. It's skin colour.

The shirts are actually from Uniqlo & are from the men department. I chose to buy the men shirts as women's clothes are usually tight fitted & I didn't really like that.

I currently have 6 tee-shirts printed. I plan to buy probably 6 more shirts next week & get them printed. The sizes ranges as: s, m, l.

The two tops are done! It's sewn, zipped & labeled.

I'm really happy with them, but it's a shame I only have one copy of each. I would love to make more copies (if people are interested), but need the facilities to make them, such as a textile screen-printing studio. Apparently the screen-printing room closes for the summer next week... which is a shame.

Sew Your Own Clothes

This project based on sewing your own clothes is almost done. I just need to iron all of them so the ink doesn't get washed off. Also need to cut the material that is not needed, print the (info) tags, as well as folding them individually & sew two corners so it stays put.

The idea is to use as less packaging/labour as possible.

For the line dress idea, I discussed with my tutor & we decided a website for downloading the designs are a good idea. The reason being it allows people to make quick & easy purchases which they can download. The potential customer can browse the website & choose the the colours & sizes available. The designs that are downloaded can be either printed on paper or fabric. These choices allow the consumer to display the design as a print or to be worn.

I've allowed a download button, where the visitor can download the design for free. The idea of giving a design for free isn't always a bad thing. It promotes the concept of "sew your own clothes" by presenting it in a template. There are contact details where the visitor can purchase the chosen design screen-printed on fabric.

Make Do & Mend

The movement of "Make Do & Mend" came about in 1943 (in the midst of the WW2). There was a shortage of clothes available due to both the number of manufacturers and shipping. Make Do & Mend is an idea that encourages people to take their old clothes & renew them by turning them into something new.

Nowadays, people can readily buy new clothes & just throw away their old clothes or by giving it to charity. Clothes are cheap & can be bought from supermarkets. The popular fashion magazines are filled with designer clothes as well as clothes from the high street. It encourages us to shop more.

Make Do & Mend isn't asking us to stop shopping, but to cut down on throwing clothes that can easily be mended, i.e. sewing on a button.

Clothes are so cheap, such as from Primark, which leads to us throwing more out. This continuous cycle increases our environmental costs.

Tee-shirt & photography

Photographs printed on shirts are commonly seen in shops today. Above are tee-shirts currently available at Topshop & Topman.

A photograph is chosen from a roll of films & developed by screen-printing it onto a tee-shirt. The design is very simple, with just a photograph & will have a ribbon label sewn inside. It is a photograph with different scenes of London's Trafalgar Square.

It is interesting to see the three different ideas that have been communicated through clothing. They all are similar due to its colour & the simplicity of each. The aesthetic of each idea are... I cannot find the word for it......

Crease & Inspirations

This is one of the designs for my scanning collection. I have taken an existing striped fabric & scanned it onto the computer, whilst manipulating it to create an eerie perspective. If worn, the garment would appear to be punched in, but it's impossible as the body is flat behind the garment. The illusion goes into nothingness as it becomes all black.

Bridget Riley (Op Art Artist) was somebody I have always liked since learning about her work in secondary school. She uses lines to create a 3-dimension on a flat surface, as well as movement in the paintings.

Alexander McQueen's dress worn by Victoria Beckham. It is designed to emphasis a woman's body & create a very flattering garment due to the close placement of the lines, that run from dark to light. White in the middle creates space, & black is known to give the appearance of a thin body.

Christopher Kane designed this piece that looks as if King Kong is real, & the mouth appears to go into the body.

Below is a video from Maison Martin Margiela's SS2011/12. The interesting thing about this fashion show is the flat piece of fabric in front of the garments & at the back is the what-we-are-used-to shape.

Line Dress & Fabric Printing

Victor Vasarely's painting is a huge inspiration to starting of this idea of using lines to create something that has the appearance of not being 2-dimensional (on a flat surface).

Tee-shirts with images in relation to illusions. The one on the left is a simple, yet interesting idea. It uses graph paper that is creased so it looks as if the shirt is creased, but when you look at the shirt again, you'll notice it's flat (not folded).

This idea incorporate both the word (typography) & the object. It is another simple idea that is visually beautiful due to its simplicity & cleanliness.

James Bill created the above image with the use of gold-leaves & technical drawing. The gold really stands out & the line drawings are fairly light. Yet with the use of spacing, you can see there should be something above the dotted pieces of gold. Our minds usually becomes bored of an image easily & so look for something more. With the spacing & the layout of the dots in a slightly squashed diamond, you can imagine it to be 3-dimensional.

An old idea where flat drawings can be folded into cone-shaped objects, in this case dolls.

Above, are the designs that have influenced me to create a clothing whereby it can either be a template (2D) or made into something that can be worn. The pattern on the surface is designed to manipulate the shape of the human body with the use of lines. This can manipulating the depth, the dimension and emphasise specific areas, perhaps making an area more flattering.

The task was to figure out a way of packaging the design. It shouldn't be too big & shouldn't use much packaging due to the idea of saving money. The front has the main text & the back has a section of the design with its lines for cutting & sewing. A card would be inserted in the middle of the packaging to keep it its shape. The top right corner & bottom right corner would be sewn to keep the packaging from opening (the sewing would be like the same as when you buy socks & a pair is sewn together). A small card with information would be attached on one of the corners with a diagram of the design being worn.

Five styles are designed, & two are printed onto fabric (style no. 1 & 5).

Style no. 1: 11 copies
Style no. 5: 12 copies

Maison Martin Margiela had made the fairytale story of Cinderella come to life by making the glass slippers. These are sold individually, so you would have to buy two to make a pair. I believe the idea is that one shoe is an ornament (for display) & a pair is for function (but obviously it's made out of glass so can break easily).

I want to take this idea into my line dresses by selling the life-size ones (style no. 5) individually.

This is style number 5, where the dress is developed into a moire design. The detail is on the collar area & the shoulders are emphasised to give it the illusion of a strong top structure.

A lot of light got into the film due to handling it wrong when rolling the film.

Long exposure at Convent Gardens.

In the beginning of the year, I bought a Holga camera from Lomography in London. I had no idea which camera to choose & they were all displayed so beautifully. I saw there was many Diana cameras, yet I chose the chunky Holga & have been playing around with it ever since, but not that often. It's unpredictable & fun... no editing or seeing the results from a screen.

The thing I like about lomography is the multiple exposures, as well as it being not perfect (i.e. perfect focusing, or blurred background). I remember I bought two films (Kodak) & played with it. The thing was, it was a cloudy day in London. The other time I used it was inside a place where I played bowling. Basically when I got my photos back, it was all gray & the first photo (^above) is from one of those films.

Second photo is when I started playing with double exposure.
Third was using flash at night at a fountain at Piccadilly Circus.

Recently, I have purchased black & white film. On the camera, there is the choice of getting 12 exposures (6 x 6cm) on a 120 roll film or 16 exposures (6 x 4.5cm). For the b&w film, I used had 16 exposures, which led to some beautiful photos overlapping & in one photograph (e.g. the last couple of photos above).

This plays well with my project based on 'Perception'. I enjoy the process & how there are different scenes in one image. I plan to develop this by printing it onto tee-shirts. It ties in to the theme of my project, as well as something that is aesthetically pleasing, enjoyable to make & focused on the city of London. I particularly like the last image on the left, as it has both the National Art Gallery, a Trafalgar Square fountain, & buildings & statues that is seen around London.

Today, I had my final ever tutorial.

Last week, I had a group tutorial where I felt not too satisfied with what I had done/shown. I had a lot of feedback from my classmates & tutor (Sue). The problem I had is showing the relationship of artists and my work. I find it difficult to link it somehow & how to present my inspirations. I've made a research book of all the images that I have collected throughout this final year. These are in my "found image" folder on desktop.

Jun Nakao is a fashion designer, as well as a creative director. Nakao created paper couture garments, which are considered one of his best artworks. The idea is to have a playful relationship with the audience. The garments are light & can be seen through enhances the concept of seeing the invisible.

The careful, intricate details adds to its appearance of a fragile surface. The garments are white & doesn't need any other colour, due to the patterns & shadows it creates. Even though it looks delicate, it is rather structural, just like paper.

A book

In the process of designing a book to present my development in my project based on perception. I've used both Quark & Adobe to design books, but now using InDesign since I bought CS5. I do find it comfortable to use.. maybe since I use Illustrator & Photoshop so is used to Adobe.

Anyway, it's a fun process - to design, arrange, print & bind a book. It's hard work presented in one book. There is a lot of layout to consider & I personally like using guidelines & grids to design. I suppose it gives me guidance & boundaries - a little tip in what to do. I have split the book into a handful of chapters, ranging from 'drawing' to screen-printing'.

I wanted to show the process I have taken & the mediums I have considered. I have written more in this book than any more my previous so hope it explains well (also hope I have written everything I have thought about, but it is difficult to remember). I'm trying to play more with the layout, rather than keeping it too centred (such as my previous books), everything is centred & a lot of white space.. which isn't a bad thing).

Multiple copies printed on cotton, but after sewing it together it didn't look that satisfying. Luckily, previously did some prints on satin & am pleased with the result. The surface shines from the light & the quality looks&feels much better.

Textile Screen-Printing

Spent the day missing my bus stop whilst in search of a store that does cheap A2 printing. I needed them for screen-printing so thankfully, the quality was fine (in comparison to another one that I waited for so long.. only to see the have a black box on the middle of the page). I got two A2 b&w prints printed for £4.60 in total, which I found pretty good, but it was just on basic inkjet paper. I did a 10 Striped, 6 red Crease & 6 black versions. Previously, I did test prints of the Crease design in red & it turned out quite good. The colour was more vibrant, yet I still wanted black versions too. I think b&w are pretty good colours to work with. I tired to print the Striped design in the same red, but it didn't work out so well. It looked rather flat. I will need to cut & sew them then screen-print some labels.

Initially wanted to print these designs in black, but the screen-printing room had none so I had to use grey mixed with what was left with black. When there was black ink, I tried it but it didn't look as what I was expecting. It was very harsh against the thin fabric. Where the lines meet, it becomes dark & the black becomes a block of colour, & I prefer the grey.

I first thought to print these digitally at the textile print bureau at London College of Fashion. I tested it by screen-printing it, but it came out as a blob or splatter of blue. I tried halftone to keep the gradients of greys & the result was much better. The blue looked flat, whereas the black looked more of what I wanted. I have also gone ahead with the digital textile printing & have to wait & see what the results are like.

This design are creases and the four are different experimentation.

There was a moment this term where I wasted a couple of weeks.. lack in motivation, inspiration, whatever it was. I get stressed & count each days I missed. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to go to the library & a friend of mine accompanied me. He got me brain food (a banana) & post-it notes to stick on things I found interesting in books. He did a mini-task for me whereby I had to list 5 things in relation to my project, which was psychology/perception. Then with those 5 lists, I had to generate another 5 lists & so forth. In the end, he told me to pick one of the & find a book on it. After that day, I have been on track with my work now. He told me everyone has those days where they don't do anything for some time. It's a true break. In times of stress, he gave me the motivation & I appreciate such a friend.

Garamond works best, & I am sticking with serifs as it gives a stronger indication of what is behind the black. The "B" & "C" stands out a lot behind the black in comparison to the other letters than are not curved.

.. Going back to Times New Roman & playing around with the spacing of the letters.

Testing different colours... Red is too harsh. Green is too light. Brown is nothing. Orange is still the colour..

Opacity of type

Testing different stroke weight of each lines & the colour of the letter A. The first ones with the horizontal lines are much simpler, but wanted to add vertical lines to create a mesh effect, even though unsure which is most effective. Yet this type of chart is very handy to lay everything out together / side-by-side to see how it looks & which works best.

Stripes are usually perceived as very structural and specific. I wanted to re-create it by scanning the pattern then manipulating it in a way where it appears more organic. The further the fabric, the softer it becomes. The closer it is, the more detail you see. The blackness is quite satisfying to me as goes to nothingness. It plays with the form of the human body.

The bottom one works best due to the way it sits behind each black letter. It blends better than the first as the stem of the letters get cut off in the first one. The "B" is more subtle too. I plan to letterpress these to get some further results, & plus the smell of the letterpress room is amazing.

Folding Paper

Paper folded to create waves, both are the same paper, but the paper was left to stand on its own in the first image. Image 2 was slightly pressed to allow the scanner to take in more of the creases. Creases & folds are an interesting topic to look at as for example, the paper is white but the shadows creates the colours as well as the soft texture.. the blurred areas to the sharp points.

Hands at different distances

The further away, the more ere & abstract the image becomes. Image 5 shows where some parts of the hand is highlighted by the light from the scanner & where other areas that are further away from the scanner had become blurred & shadowed.

Inspired by Mary Katrantzou, I played with lines & their change in direction.. whether it is subtle or sharp. In doing so, gave shape to the 2-dimensional surface. I particularly enjoy giving structure to the shoulder area& where it enhances the bust / chest by it looking more closer in perspective than the neck area.
